Mysuru/Kundapura: Despite warnings from the education and police department asking students to obey the High Court interim order on Hijabs, the students continued their stir demanding to wear hijabs in the classrooms

Girls' government pre-university college students in Arasikere of Hassan district have urged the Principal to issue them transfer certificates if they do not permit to wear hijabs in the classrooms. 

Meanwhile, the Principal of Madikeri Junior college who warned the students not to wear hijabs in the classrooms has received threat calls from the fundamental groups. One Mohammad Taisif has warned the Principal that he face the consequences for not allowing students to wear hijabs in the classrooms. 

Speaking to reporters, the Principal of Madekri junior college said that he will not afraid to the threat calls. “I have just instructed the students to obey the High Court order, I will continue my duty”, he said. 

If students do not wear Uniforms, the Rs. 200 penalty will be imposed on each student, said K.T.Krishnegowda, Principal of Hassan government first-grade college. The college has implemented the Uniform rules, he said. 

In Gundlupete of Chamarajanagara district, two students have sat outside the classroom after school has not allowed them not to enter classrooms wearing hijabs. Girls have been asked to sit in a separate room in Government Women First grade college in Hunasuru. 

In Kundapura, which is also the epicentre of the Hijab controversy, students of government pre-university college have submitted their assignments to the teachers outside the college gate. 

Wearing hijabs, the girl students have submitted the assignments to their class teachers at the premises of the college gate. 

Commerce department students must submit two assignments in a year as part of their internal assessment. Students who are denied to enter the classrooms have prepared the assignments at home and submitted them to the lecturers. 

Protests continue: Students have continued their dharna in different parts of the state demanding to wear hijabs in the classrooms. 

Meanwhile, police have warned the students to register a case against them for violating the prohibitory orders in the state. Few students have returned to the home after college authorities have denied them to attend the classes. 

Students have staged a dharna in front of Vijaya Paramedical college in Belagavi urged the College Principal to allow them to attend college with hijabs. However, Principal Dr. Prakash Patil has denied them to enter the college citing the high Court order. The later college has declared holiday to avoid untoward incident. 

Students in Vijay Para Medical college agreed to remove Burkha but refused to remove hijabs, though college management has tried to pacify the students, their effort went vain, with no option left college has declared a holiday. 

Protests continued in Managaluru, one student has fainted while protesting at college premises, though fellow students informed the lecturer, they do not bother to help them, alleged protesting Muslim students in Kavuru government pre-university college in Mangaluru. 

Around 25 Muslim girls, students have abstained from the classes in Balehonnuru Pre University college in Chiakamagaluru. Students have refused to remove hijab, thus they have abstained from classes. The protest has been reported in Gadaga Lakshimeshwara college. 

Students of Lingaraju college in Belagavi continued the protest. Commerce students of Lingaraju college have decided to continue their protest outside the college premises. Nearly 40 students have been demanding to wear hijabs in the classroom, but college management firm in its decision not to allow students to wear hijabs. 

A large number of students have staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Belagavi. Corporater of AIMIM part has accompanied the students during a protest march to the DC office in Belagavi. Even students have also boycotted internal assessment tests. Students have also decided to continue dharna in front of DCs office in Belagavi. 

Education dept taking note: Meanwhile, the education department has stated headcounts of protesting students.

Officials of the education department have started headcounts of the students who are protesting for hijabs. Respective Block Education Officers have been asked to collect the actual numbers of the students protesting for hijabs. In turn, BEOs instructed the Principals to give the details of the students who staged protests demanding to wear hijabs. 

In 2021-22 total 82,000 students have been studying in Pre University colleges in the state. In which only 300 to 400 students are protesting, their percentage is below 1 %, said Mr. B.C. Nagesh. 

Six students of Udupi Government girls pre-university college have first approached the High Court. Petitioner Hajra Shifa has filed the petition in the High Court. It was alleged that miscreants have attacked the brother of Shifa. Few miscreants have banged into the hotel of Shifa’s father and attacked her brother. He has been admitted to a private hospital in Udupi.
