SC allows Professor Venugopal to continue in Bengaluru University VC post

Bengaluru: The Supreme Court has granted a stay to the order of the Karnataka High Court which had quashed the appointment of Professor K.R. Venugopal as the Vice-Chancellor of Bengaluru University.
A division bench comprising Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice Suryakant issued notice to the respondents and stayed the order of the Karnataka High Court dated March 17.
On March 17, the division bench comprising Justice S Sujatha and Justice Shivashankar Amarannavar has upheld the judgment of a single bench, which quashed the appointment of Prof K.R. Venugopal as the vice-chancellor of Bengaluru University.
Office of the Governor, Karnataka government and Professor Venugopal had filed the writ petitions challenging the High Court order.
The division bench while dismissing the writ appeals, by the office of Governor, Karnataka government, and BU VC, Venugopal, the division bench has confirmed the order of a single judge on Septe4mber 24, 2019.
Dr. Sangamesh Patil one of the contenders for the VC post had challenged the appointment of Professor Venugopal as VC of Bengaluru University. He had contended that Chancellor has not taken consent of the state government before appointing Professor Venugopal as VC of BU. The consent is mandatory under section 14(4)of the Karnataka Universities Act, 2000, he argued.
