Mumbai: Gujarat Titans (GT) opened their Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 campaign with a 5-wicket victory over the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Monday at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium.

GT completed the 159-ball target set by LSG with two balls to spare. In their first encounter against LSG, GT won the toss and elected to bowl first.

GT got off to a bad start as they lost their opening batsman, Shubman Gill, for a duck when the score was only four runs; Gill was out for a duck and was relieved by Dushmanta Chameera. Vijay Shankar was the team's second wicket to fall (4). Chameera, a Sri Lankan pacer, clean bowled him with a beautiful yorker.

Australian Matthew Wade and skipper Hardik Pandya gradually constructed the innings, and both hitters shared a 57-run partnership until Pandya was dismissed for 33 runs. Wade followed him to the pavilion and scored 30 runs in the next over.
David Miller and Rahul Tewatia, both rookie batters, put on a 60-run partnership.

After Miller (30) left, Rahul Tewatia was joined by Abhinav Manohar, and both batsmen completed the remaining business. Tewatia had an unbeaten 40 runs and Manohar had scored an unbeaten 15.

LSG got off to a shaky start, as they lost their skipper, KL Rahul, on the opening delivery of the game. Rahul, who joined the squad from PBKS, made no contributions to the 15th edition of the IPL in his first match.

Quinton De Kock, LSG's veteran batsman, was dismissed for seven runs. When the score was only 13, LSG lost two important wickets in just 2.3 overs. LSG then lost two more wickets in quick succession, Evin Lewis (10) and Manish Pandey (6), and by the end of 4.3 overs, LSG was in disarray, having lost four wickets for only 29 runs.

The LSG innings was stabilised by Ayush Badoni and Deepak Hooda. Both batsmen hit half-centuries and helped their team by putting together an 87-run partnership. With these two batters' contributions, the LSG put up a respectable 159 run total.
