Fuel price increase: Opposition walks out of Lok Sabha; Rajya Sabha adjourned

New Delhi: Following a hike in diesel, petrol, and cooking gas prices, the opposition parties staged a protest in the Lok Sabha. Petrol and diesel prices were hiked by 80 paise per litre on Tuesday, and cooking gas prices were increased by Rs 50 per cylinder.

It has been four and a half months since the price of fuel remained unchanged. According to the opposition, the BJP-led Union government did not raise the price with the five state Assembly elections in mind. The opposition parties not only staged a protest, but they also walked out demanding the rollback.

The issue was raised by Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury during Question Hour.

Members of the Congress, NCP, Trinamool, DMK, and Left parties raised slogans and staged protests from their seats, demanding a reversal. The opposition parties attempted to raise the subject as soon as the Lok Sabha assembled for Question Hour, but Speaker Om Birla refused and asked the opposition parties to discuss the issue after Question Hour.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned following chaos over the issue.

Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury both criticised the BJP-led government for raising fuel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices, alleging that the government is profiting by exploiting the poor.

Kharge said many may say that prices of fuel are increasing because of the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, but the fact is that, according to the Petroleum Minister, "We don’t even buy one percent of our fuel requirements from Russia," he said.

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav was warning that fuel prices would increase after the election and was asking the people to remain alert, but I don’t know who brought the BJP to power, Jaya Bachchan, MP and former actress said.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said, "We have been telling the people that fuel prices will surge, just after the election results and Modiji proved us correct." He stated that we will fight for the common man's cause both inside and outside of parliament.
