In a first, Mumbai redevelopment market exceeds new projects: Report
MUMBAI: (Sep 3) Mumbai's housing redevelopment market has for the first time crossed new project launches, signalling the segment's evolution from policy experiment to market-driven necessity, according to a report.
The report, "Redevelopment in Mumbai: The Inflection Point, from land scarcity to systematic urban renewal" released on Wednesday at the NAREDCO Maharashtra Real Estate & Infrastructure Investors' Summit 2026 also stated that more than 1,000 redevelopment projects have been launched since 2020, comprising 13 per cent of Mumbai's overall residential supply.
More importantly, redevelopment's share of total housing sales surged to 15 per cent in 2025 to H1 2026, up from 6 per cent recorded over 2016-2021, confirming that homebuyers are actively choosing redevelopment over greenfield alternatives, it said.
