Senior actress Jayanthi no more
Bengaluru: Senior actress Jayanthi (76) passed away in Bengaluru on Monday morning. She acted on over 500 films across Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Marathi over a career spanning six decades. She predominantly acted in Kannada films starting with Jenu Goodu in 1963.
Born in Ballari as Kamala Kumari, she moved to Chennai and her mother and siblings at a very young age. She joined films at a young age and made a mark in all south Indian languages.
She won the Presidential Award for her acting in Miss Leelavathi. She has also won seven Karnataka State Film Awards and two Filmfare Awards. She was one of the few actresses who managed to make a mark in both conservative and glamorous roles. In later years, she continued to act in supporting roles.
Some of her best-known works include Chandavalliya Thota, Miss Leelavathi, Kasturi Nivasa, Edakallu Guddadamele and Masanada Hoovu in Kannada.
