Second batch of pilgrims leave for Amarnath yatra from Jammu

Under a tight security blanket, the second batch of over 5,200 pilgrims set out from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp on Thursday for the sacred Amarnath cave shrine in the South Kashmir Himalayas, officials said.

The annual 38-day pilgrimage, which began on Thursday, is being conducted via two routes — the traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam trail in Anantnag district and the shorter 14-km Baltal route in Ganderbal district, known for its steep ascent. The yatra will end on August 9.

The pilgrims departed in a convoy of 168 vehicles, closely escorted by personnel from the Jammu and Kashmir Police and central paramilitary forces, ensuring a secure passage through the region’s sensitive zones.
