‘Nobody else has right to decide’: India says only Dalai Lama can choose his successor

NEW DELHI: (Jul 3) India announced that Union ministers Kiren Rijiju and Rajeev Ranjan Singh will attend the 90th birthday celebrations of the Dalai Lama on Sunday, The Indian Express reported.

This statement came a day after China asserted that the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama must be approved by its government, insisting that the process must adhere to Chinese laws as well as “religious rituals and historical conventions.”

The developments follow a strong message from the 14th Dalai Lama himself, who on Wednesday reiterated that only the Gaden Phodrang Trust — an organisation he established — holds the exclusive right to determine his successor.

“I once again affirm that the Gaden Phodrang Trust alone has the authority to recognise my future reincarnation. No one else has any right to interfere in this matter,” the Dalai Lama stated.
