Amritsar: Bigwig of Congress Navjot Singh Sidhu and Shiromani Akali Dal's controversial leader Bikram Singh Majithia, were defeated by a first-timer AAP leader in Amritsar East constituency. 

Jeevanjot Kaur, the district president of Aam Aadmi Party, bagged 28289 votes against Sidhu 23488 votes and Bikram Singh Majithia 18799 votes. In 2017, this constituency was won by Navjot Singh Sidhu. 

After the victory, Jeevanjot Kaur said, " It's the victory of the people of Punjab. My ticket was announced around Dec 3 ...Got positive indication during door-to-door campaigns that Punjab has overcome identity politics". 

For Sidhu, this defeat is unbelievable because he was sent thrice to Parliament from Amritsar but all three on a BJP ticket, and once to the Punjab Assembly, as the Congress candidate from Amritsar East.

Conceding his defeat, Sidhu put out a tweet saying, “The voice of the people is the voice of God …. Humbly accept the mandate of the people of Punjab …. Congratulations to Aap !!!”

Rebutting Sudhu's brand of politics, AAP put out a tweet in response to his tweet. 

"People of Punjab have given reply to this disgraceful politics of bad-mouthing and abuses. We forgive you @sherryontop, but people of Punjab won't tolerate such low discourse again, this is dawn of change, politics of development and positive discourse"
