Gehlot bats for Rahul Gandhi as Congress chief ahead of CWC meeting

New Delhi: Congress Working Committee meeting chaired by interim president Sonia Gandhi has begun on Sunday.

Rahul Gandhi, senior Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Ambika Soni arrived at the AICC office to discuss the current political situation and the poll debacle in five states- Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

Before the meeting began, senior Congress leaders took the blame for the poll defeat on themselves.

Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot said Gandhi's are important for Congress unity. Punjab was lost due to infighting".

Ashok Gehlot added, " Rahul Gandhi should become the party president. For the last three decades, nobody from the Gandhi family became a PM or a minister. It is significant to understand that the Gandhi family is important for Congress' unity".

Uttarakhand leaders Harish Rawat considered himself responsible for the defeat.  'Don't know how to face Sonia Gandhi'. he said.

Earlier today, the Parliamentary strategy group of Congress  discussed the issues to be raised in the upcoming Parliament session. The meeting of the parliamentary strategy group of Congress called by Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chairperson Sonia Gandhi was held at 10 am at 10 Janpath.

Congress failed to retain Punjab under the leadership of former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi. He lost from two assembly constituencies.  Also, state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu lost to AAP's Jeevanjot Kaur from the Amritsar East constituency.

Despite her high-pitched campaign in Uttar Pradesh Priyanka Vadra, the Congress could manage to win only two of the 403 assembly seats with the vote share plummeting to a meagre 2.33 per cent and most of its candidates losing security deposits.
