Bengaluru: Basavaraj Bommai, son of former Chief Minister S.R. Bommai, started his political career with the Janata Dal. 

Graduate in Mechanical Engineering, junior Bommai was trained in the political school of erstwhile Janata Dal. Having authority in irrigation matters and implemented key irrigation schemes of the state. 

Born in January 28, 1960, Mr. Bommai is a close aid of caretaker Chief Minister B.S.Yediyurappa. He was also in-charge minister Udupi and Haveri districts.

Three-time MLA of Shiggaon Assembly constituency, Mr.Bommai, was the first minister B.S.Yediyurappa cabinet in 2008, he was minister for Water Resources in BSY, D.V. Sadananda Gowda and Jagadish Shettar cabinet from 2008 to 2013. 

He was minister for Cooperation during the second term of the BSY government in 2019, from September 2019 to February 2020. Same time he had also handled the Home portfolio and Law and Parliamentary Affairs minister. 

Mr. Bommai was a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council twice (in 1998 and 2004) from Dharwad local authorities constituency. He left the Janata Dal (United) and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in February 2008. In the 2008 Karnataka state elections, he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Shiggaon constituency in the Haveri district.

Interestingly he has not followed his leader B.S.Yediyurappa when he formed KJP. Convinced Mr. Yediyurapap that he will stay in the party considering the political situation in his constituency Shiggaon. In 2013 he elected from Shiggaon constituency, in 2013 he prevailed party central leadership to induct B.S. Yediyurappa to the party fold.
