All India Mahila Congress chief Sushmita Dev quits party

Congress MP and All India Mahila Congress President, Sushmita Dev has quit the party and is all set to join the Trinamool Congress party on Monday.

Ms.Dev will meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee before officially joining TMC.

In tweeter bio, she posted, “Former Member” of the party, it was the first clue of Congress MP, deserting the grand-old party. She has also resigned to the primary members of the party.

Sushmita Dev is in Kolkata to meet with Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee. She will be the face of the Trinamool in Assam if she joins the party, Trinamool Congress sources said.

Ms. Dev has written to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and has cited no reason for her decision to quit the party, but talking about a “new chapter of public service”.

She is a daughter of Assam Congress stalwart and influential Bengali leader Santosh Mohan Dev; She was appointed as All India Mahila Congress wing. She had earlier been an MP from Silchar in Assam, represented by her father.

Ms. Dev was among the Congress leaders whose Twitter handle was locked over a post showing images of the nine-year-old girl rape victim parents in Delhi.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi shared the images after he met with the parents, and many tweeted it. As Rahul Gandhi's account was blocked, several Congress leaders, including Ms Dev, changed their display picture to the Congress MP's in solidarity. The account was restored last week, after which the Congress posted “Satyameva Jayate”.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal took a Twitter handle to express his displeasure against party high command regarding quitting Sushmita Dev.

“Sushmita Dev, Resigns from the primary membership of our Party. While young leaders leave, we ‘oldies’ are blamed for our efforts to strengthen it. The Party moves on with: Eyes Wide Shut”, Mr. Sibhal tweeted.
