Last month, the central government empowered the BSF to conduct searches, arrests suspects and make seizures within a 50 km radius of the Indian territory along the international border in Assam, West Bengal and Punjab. This step is aimed at maintaining 'zero tolerance' against terrorism.
The Home Ministry took the decision "in the excise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 129 of the Border Security Force Act, 1948 (47 of 1968)", making amendments in the notification of the Union government published in the Gazette of India on July 3, 2014.
