Jantar Mantar too central to protest? World has many, from Hyde Park to Union Square
NEW DELHI: (Oct 12) Jantar Mantar's denotification as a protest site in Delhi may have brought the focus back on whether demonstrations should be allowed in the heart of a city, but there are many"free-speech zones" at central locations globally.
Be it the Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park, Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square of London, Union Square in New York, Lafayette Square and National Mall in Washington, Taksim Square in Istanbul, Hong Lim Park in Singapore or Place de la Bastille in Paris -- all are centrally located.
Besides, Tahrir Square of Cairo, Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Kyiv and Tiananmen Square of Beijing have become globally renowned for some of the biggest demonstrations in recent history.
