Former chief of AICC Rahul Gandhi has said that the Congress had approached BSP chief Mayawati seeking an alliance to fight the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election together, but she did not respond to his suggestion.

He revealed this on Saturday while addressing a gathering at the launch of the book ‘The Dalit Truth — Battles for Realising Ambedkar’s Vision’, edited by K Raju, a former bureaucrat and close aid of Gandhi in New Delhi.

He said he reached out to BSP chief Mayawati for an alliance just before the elections to the UP Assembly. and even offered CM post to her, but she did not respond as she was under pressure from investigating agencies such as ED, CBI, and Pegasus.

Targeting Mayawati, Rahul said she did not fight the elections. We had sent her a message regarding an alliance. Offered CM post as well, but she did not even talk. He remembered Kanshi Ram and said leaders like Kanshi Ram gave their blood and sweat to awaken the Dalit voice in UP and it is a different matter that the Congress suffered losses, but he strengthened the voice of Dalits. The scenario is that Mayawati is saying she would not fight for that voice, said Rahul.

"They (the government) will not allow the Constitution to be implemented. The Constitution may be enforced through institutions, but they have seized all of them, "he added. "If we don't have control over institutions, we don't have control over the Constitution."

The former AICC chief said he never went behind power and was thankful to the country for showering love and respect on him.

He said the country not only gave him love, but it had thrown shoes at him.He claimed to have received an explanation for why this was happening. The country wants him to teach. The country is saying it wants him to learn and understand. He said it doesn’t matter if it pains him to learn and understand.
