Bajarang Dal activists assaulted Halal meat seller in Shivamogga

Bengaluru: Right-wing activists' aggressive campaign against selling Halal meals in Karnataka gets a violent turn, as some Bajarang Dal activists allegedly attacked a Muslim meat seller in Bhadravathi town in Shivamogga.

Former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Thursday has made a scathing attack on Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai for not containing communal hatredness in the state. Police have registered a case against Bajarang Dal activists.

A case has been registered under the appropriate sections of the IPC, Superintendent of Police BM Laxmi Prasad said. The SP informed a news agency that Hosamane police have registered a case and an investigation is going on.

According to the police, on Wednesday, some Bajrang Dal activists were campaigning in the Hosamane area of Bhadravathi against halal meat. And around 12.30 pm, they visited chicken meat selling shop in the vicinity, and the activists asked the meat seller, Thousif, to sell non-halal meat at his shop. The meat seller told them that such meat was not ready and would be made available. The activists were irked by the reply of the meat seller, and they allegedly thrashed him, the police complaint said.

Police sources said that they have interrogated five right-wing activists in connection with the case.

Another case was registered in Old Bhadravathi against Bajarang Dal activists for allegedly threatening a hotel owner for not serving them ‘non-halal’ meat. The police registered a case on the charge of abusing the hotelier.

Former CM HD Kumaraswamy yesterday lashed out at the government for remaining silent on the halal issue and asked Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai to take strict action against right wing activists who are allegedly creating a rift in society in the name of religion.

"The halal debate is still in its early stages. We'll have to look at it. It's a thing that people do. Serious concerns have now been raised concerning it. I'll investigate it "Bommai stated during a press conference.

When asked about some right-wing organisations' request for a boycott of halal meat, Bommai stated, "As far as my government is concerned, we are not right-wing or left-wing, only growth wing."
