AFI announces 'Javelin Throw Day' on August 7 to honour Neeraj Chopra

New Delhi: In a fitting tribute to Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has asked all its state members to organise javelin competitions every August 7.

As India is still gripped in the euphoria of a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, the Athletics Federation of India announced that javelin throw events on August 7 every year will be held to honour Neeraj Chopra's victory.

Chairman of AFI Planning Committee Lalit Bhanot said in a bid to promote sport; competitions will be conducted every year throughout India on that day.

After winning the Gold medal in Javelin throw, Neeraj Chopra received a grand welcome at the Olympics Games Village in Tokyo. On Saturday, his 87.58m throw earned India the first gold in track and field events at the Olympics.

After topping the qualification round on Wednesday, Chopra came into the final as a medal contender with a stunning first-round throw of 86.59m.
