Vijayawada: Six people died due to a mishap at a chemical unit in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh.  The disaster occurred at the Porus Laboratories plant in Akkireddygudem village of Musunuru Mandal late Wednesday. 

Five persons died on the spot, while another succumbed at a hospital. Among the dead, four of the deceased hailed from Bihar. The injured were shifted to Government General Hospital in Vijayawada, where the condition of five of them is stated to be critical.

Superintendent of Police Rahul Sharma said the fire in the factory at Akkireddygudem was possibly caused by a nitric acid leak. The state government has announced ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 5 lakh to those injured in the fire.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep grief over the loss of lives due to a mishap at a chemical unit in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh. He also prayed for quick recovery of the injured.
