Kangana appears before court after 7 months in defamation case by Javed Akhtar

Mumbai: Seven months after a court in Mumbai issued her summons, Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut appeared in the court on Monday.

After she repeatedly failed to respond to the summons, the court had said that if she did not appear on September 20, it would issue a warrant against her. The court is hearing a criminal defamation case filed against her by veteran Bollywood lyricist Javed Akhtar.

The issue pertains to an interview given to a private television channel by Kangana after the suicide of Sushant Singh Rajput in June 2020. After the interview was telecast Akhtar filed the defamation case in November 2020. The court issues summons to Kangana in February 2021.

Kangana had allegedly referred to a coterie in Bollywood that was responsible for the suicide of Sushant Singh and taken the name of Javed Akhtar. Kangana had approached the Bombay High Court after the summons was issued by the trial court and sought to quash the proceedings. However, the High Court had rejected her contentions and the trial was allowed to proceed.

Kangana has ruffled many feathers in Bollywood through her outbursts over the last two years. Meanwhile, her latest film Thalaivii released in theatres last week. It is a biopic of late Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa.
