Gujarat cadre IPS officer Rakesh Asthana becomes Delhi top cop

New Delhi: IPS officer Rakesh Asthana took charges as the new Police Commissioner of Delhi three days before retirement.

Newly appointed Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana said, "My focus will be on basic policing. If we do this, there would a sense of satisfaction among the public and law and order situation can be maintained. We will handle specialized problems as per SOP".

According to NDTV report, a Union Home Ministry order Mr Asthana would head the Delhi Police with a year's extension in service granted "in public interest".

Asthana, a 1984-batch IPS officer, moved out of Gujarat to the CBI as Special Director after the BJP-led government came to power in 2014. Currently, Asthana is the Director-General of the Border Security Force.

Asthana was ruled out from heading the country's top investigation agency CBI. Then CBI chief Alok Verma opposed Asthana's appointment.
