Group Captain Abhinandan Varthaman awarded Vir Chakra

New Delhi: Wing Commander (now Group Captain) Abhinandan Varthaman was accorded the Vir Chakra by President Ram Nath Kovind at the investiture ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday. The gallantry medal was accorded for shooting down a Pakistani F-16 fighter aircraft during aerial combat on February 27, 2019.

Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal’s wife Lieutenant Nitika Kaul and mother Saroj Dhoundiyal received his Shaurya Chakra (Posthumous) for an operation in Jammu and Kashmir in which five terrorists were killed and 200 kg explosives were recovered.

Also, Naib Subedar Sombir accorded Shaurya Chakra posthumously for killing an A++ category terrorist during an operation in Jammu and Kashmir. His wife and mother receive the award from President Ram Nath Kovind.

President Shri Ram Nath Kovind, who is also the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, has approved 132 Awards to Armed Forces Personnel and members of Paramilitary Forces. The awards include two Kirti Chakras, one Vir Chakra, 14 Shaurya Chakras, eight Bar to Sena Medals (Gallantry), 90 Sena Medals (Gallantry), five Nao Sena Medals (Gallantry), seven Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry) and five Yudh Seva Medals.
