No Sikh employee will attend office in J&K: SGPC

Srinagar:  The Srinagar Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (GPC) on Saturday said that no Sikh employee will attend office till the Jammu and Kashmir government assures their safety after a Sikh woman who was principal of a public school was killed by gunmen.

The killings sparked a wave of outrage in Kashmir. In the wake of civilian killings, security was further tightened across the capital city.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said that a “befitting reply” will be given to terrorists who killed two teachers at a school in Srinagar’s old town Eidgah earlier on Thursday. The victims were reportedly shot from point-blank range after some unidentified men barged inside the building.

On Thursday, a Sikh woman who was the principal of a government higher secondary school in Eidgah, and her colleague Deepk Chand were shot dead by the militants inside the school.

With the killing of the teachers, a total of five civilians have been targeted by terrorists in the three days. On Tuesday, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists gunned down three persons, including a popular pharmacist Makhan Lal Bindroo, whose death triggered widespread criticism.

Former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah said in a tweet, "The targeted attacks in Kashmir are designed to drive fissures & widen the gap between communities. We cannot let terror dictate who lives here and who doesn’t. It is imperative that all of us belonging to the majority community reach out to those who today fear for their lives".
