Trump Tariffs Live: Wall Street yo-yos in hyper-volatile trade

Agency report - Wall Street’s major indexes opened with steep losses on Monday, as the S&P 500 edged closer to confirming bear market territory. Investors, rattled by mounting concerns over the economic impact of President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff strategy, rushed toward the relative safety of government bonds. In early trading on Monday, the S&P 500 plunged 3.8%, following its worst week since the onset of the COVID-19 crisis in March 2020. The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled by 1,200 points, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite slid 4%.

The global market mood was equally grim. Hong Kong stocks nosedived 13.2%, marking their worst single-day performance since the 1997 handover. Meanwhile, U.S. crude oil prices briefly dipped below $60 a barrel, the lowest level seen since 2021.
