Kolhapuri chappal row: PIL in HC against Prada for 'unauthorised use'; seeks compensation

MUMBAI: (Jul 4) A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Bombay High Court against Italian luxury brand Prada, accusing it of unauthorized use of the traditional Kolhapuri chappal design. The petition demands compensation for Indian artisans, alleging that Prada copied the iconic style without consent.
The PIL highlights that Prada's Spring/Summer collection features 'toe-ring sandals' that closely resemble Kolhapuri chappals. These designer sandals are priced at around ₹1 lakh per pair.
"The Kolhapuri chappal is a cultural emblem of Maharashtra," stated the plea, which was filed by six lawyers from Pune.
